A Journey of Connection: From Independent Offices to a Unified Network
Steve Holstein’s journey with NurseCore began in January 1998, when the company was a much smaller organization with just a handful of offices scattered across Arizona, New York and Florida.
“When I started working for NurseCore, Larry Carr was still at the helm,” Steve recalls. “The offices weren’t even connected by data networks at that time. I was tasked with connecting our offices’ data and other communications networks.”
This project marked the beginning of a transformative career where Steve not only witnessed its growth but played a crucial role in it.
“It has been a rewarding experience full of challenges and opportunities.”
What initially drew Steve to NurseCore was a meeting with Larry Carr, the company’s founder.
“Meeting Larry Carr was the catalyst that attracted me to this company,” Steve shares.
Since then, his career has evolved significantly, with numerous opportunities to expand his knowledge of information technology. But it wasn’t just the technical skills that grew — Steve also learned how to bridge the gap between “geeky tech” and non-technical people, a skill that has proven invaluable in his role as the Director of Information Services.
Memorable Moments: Coaching, Collaborating and Overcoming Challenges
Over the past 26 years, Steve has accumulated countless memories, but one that stands out is coaching a coworker for her first marathon.
“Watching her cross the finish line was a proud moment,” he says.
Steve is particularly proud of his early achievements at NurseCore, including consolidating data from individual offices and connecting them to work together as a team.
“I enjoyed the technical challenges as well as training the office staff,” he says.
For Steve, NurseCore is more than just a workplace; it’s like family. The company has significantly impacted his personal and professional growth, particularly in learning to bridge the understanding gap between the technology side, the clinical side and the non-technical side.
Companies all around the globe faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, and NurseCore was no different. One of the most memorable team experiences for Steve was the development of the remote access solution during the pandemic.
“We had to quickly develop a way for our staff to accomplish all the field office tasks remotely,” Steve recalls.
Despite the uncertainty and fear surrounding the situation, his team collaborated brilliantly, creating and executing a project plan with very limited time and resources.
“We didn’t know how it would play out,” he recalls. “We were all somewhat scared about the uncertainty of it all. My team worked together to create and execute a plan with very limited time and resources.”
This experience highlighted the importance of collaboration and how different people’s talents complement the team.
Future-Proofing NurseCore: Embracing Security and Innovation
As Steve looks to the future, his goals revolve around creating a safer, more secure information infrastructure for NurseCore. He is also eager to spend more time working with field offices to solve problems that may not be obvious from the home office.
“I’m excited about learning how AI will make us more efficient,” he says.
Outside of work, Steve is passionate about endurance sports, including marathons and triathlons. He also loves camping, fly fishing and generally being outdoors. After a busy day, his favorite way to unwind is with a bike ride or a quick five-mile run.
“But I’m also a sugar fiend,” he admits with a grin. “I regularly raid all the candy I find in the office.”
Steve offers a piece of practical advice to new employees: “Don’t use the same password for everything.”
As he reflects on his 26 years with NurseCore, he sums up his experience in one sentence: “I wouldn’t have been here 26 years if it weren’t great.”
